When Chandler Jones joined Utility Warehouse in 2014, he already had a reason for wanting to build something more.
It wasn't simply about earning extra money. His "why", as he describes it, was his brother and his daughter. He wanted to give them better lives than the one he'd had.
That reason has stayed with him throughout his journey, serving as a constant reminder of why he began this path. For Chandler, seeing the tangible difference his early efforts made provided all the motivation he needed to realise there was something truly worth building, especially once the concept of residual income caught his attention.
When Chandler first started, he quickly realised that Utility Warehouse was a numbers game. The more customers he helped, the more his income began to grow. Initially, he was bringing in around six to ten customers a month, and while that might not sound dramatic, he could see that the small gains were beginning to add up.
His income went from around £65 to more than £120.
For Chandler, that was enough to show him there was something worth building, but it was the unique nature of residual income that really captured his interest. He wanted to understand more about how this model allowed him to move beyond the cycle of starting from scratch each month, which ultimately became his primary focus.
The great thing about residual income, he says, is that it can allow you to live life on your own terms. Instead of constantly having to start again each month, the work you've already done can continue to generate income.
He also learnt that building a residual income doesn't necessarily mean giving up everything else you're doing. In fact, his advice is that you don't need to go full time with Utility Warehouse to prosper.
If you've already got a job but want to grow your residual income, you can build it around your existing commitments. Chandler talks about how many hours you spend on social media, for example, and whether some of that time could instead be put towards building something for yourself.
It's a simple point, but one that many people can probably relate to.
When Things Started To Change
Chandler continued building the business around his existing commitments, but over time he began to see that it could become something much bigger. In March 2021, he made the decision to change his focus from upfront commission to residual income, and that began to have a significant impact on the way his income grew.
Rather than constantly starting again each month, he was building an income from the work he'd already done. By October 2021, he had reached the point where he felt ready to take the next step and focus on Utility Warehouse full time.
It's Still About His Why
Despite everything Chandler has achieved, the reason he started hasn't changed. His "why" was his brother and his daughter. He wanted to give them better lives than the one he'd had, and that remains the driving force behind what he's building.
What makes Chandler's story interesting is that it hasn't simply been building enough residual income to make Utility Warehouse his full-time focus. It's been about having a clear reason for starting, learning how the business worked and adapting his approach as he gained more experience.
His journey also shows that you don't necessarily have to go all in from the beginning. Chandler started around his existing commitments, built his customer base and gradually learned what worked for him. As the business grew and his circumstances changed, he was able to decide whether he wanted to give it more time.
That flexibility was important. He could start with what he had, build at his own pace and make bigger decisions later, once he had something tangible to build on.
What Would Chandler Say To Someone Starting Now?
His advice is refreshingly practical.
If you're already working, think about how much time you spend on things that don't move you towards your goals. Social media is an obvious example. Even a small change in how you use that time could make a difference if you're consistent with it.
And you don't need to go full time immediately.
Chandler's own journey took years. He joined in 2014, built his customer base, developed his income and eventually made the decision to focus on the business full time in 2021.
That's a very different picture from the idea that you need to change your entire life overnight.
For Chandler, it was about starting with a reason, sticking with it and learning how to build something that could eventually give him more choice.
And throughout the journey, he kept coming back to the same thing.
He kept coming back to his brother and his daughter, and the desire to give them better lives than the one he'd had.
